The plan

Day 1 — Friday: Arrive Killarney, Torc Waterfall sunset

  • Late-afternoon arrival in Killarney. Check in at your accommodation.
  • Drive 10 minutes to the Torc Waterfall car park. Walk to the waterfall and back — 40 minutes, well-paved, stunning in the evening light.
  • Dinner at The Laurels in Killarney town, or for a pint afterwards, O'Connor's for a trad session.

Day 2 — Saturday: Muckross Lake Loop (10 km)

  • Breakfast at 8am. On the trail by 9.
  • Drive 5 minutes to Muckross House car park. Walk the full Muckross Lake loop — 10 km, 3 hours, ancient oak woodland, lake views, Muckross House at the halfway point.
  • Lunch at Muckross House café.
  • Afternoon: tour of Muckross House (1 hour) and gardens.
  • Evening: dinner at Bricin in Killarney — best boxty in Ireland.

Day 3 — Sunday: Gap of Dunloe & home

  • Morning: the classic Gap of Dunloe — boat across Killarney Lakes to Lord Brandon's Cottage, then walk north through the Gap to Kate Kearney's Cottage (11 km, 3 hours).
  • Lunch at Kate Kearney's Cottage.
  • Home via the Ring of Kerry drive, or extend by one night and add Dingle.
