The Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is the narrow mountain pass that cleaves MacGillycuddy's Reeks from Purple Mountain. For 200 years it's been one of the classic Kerry experiences — jaunting car or on foot, up through old stone bridges and past small tarns, with the mountain walls rearing up on both sides.

Route & directions

How to walk it

Start at Kate Kearney's Cottage. Walk up the single-track road to the summit of the Gap (4 km, moderate climb), then descend into the Black Valley. For the classic loop, continue to Lord Brandon's Cottage and take a boat back across the Killarney lakes to Ross Castle.

Local tips

  • Watch for jaunting cars and cyclists on the road
  • Allow 5–6 hours for the full Gap + boat return
  • Book the boat transfer in advance (Easter–October)
  • Best walked early — after 11am it gets busy with day-trippers
