The plan

Day 1 — Arrive, short warm-up walk

  • Arrive at Muckross area by 4pm. Short lake walk to loosen the legs.
  • Check kit. Check weather. Early dinner at The Wicklow Heather's Killarney cousin — hearty pub food.
  • Sleep early. Tomorrow is the big day.

Day 2 — Carrauntoohil via Devil's Ladder (11 km)

  • Breakfast at 6am. Drive to Cronin's Yard for 7.30am. Sign in.
  • Up through the Hag's Glen and the Devil's Ladder to the summit of Carrauntoohil.
  • Summit and back: 7-8 hours. Sign out at Cronin's Yard.
  • Dinner: The Quays Bar & Grill in Killarney. Huge portions. Earned.

Day 3 — Recovery walk & home

  • Gentle recovery: the Ross Island loop — 7 km, flat, on the peninsula near Ross Castle.
  • Lunch at Ross Castle café.
  • Drive home slow.
